David Baldwin is Reader in Psychiatry and Head of the Mental Health Group in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences at the University of Southampton, and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at the Royal South Hants Hospital in Southampton. He trained in medicine at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, and in psychiatry at St Mary's Hospital Medical School and The Maudsley Hospital.
Dr Baldwin is a Fellow of The Royal College of Psychiatrists, Fellow of the CINP, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts, and a Member of the ECNP. He is the Chair of the Psychopharmacology Special Interest Group of The Royal College of Psychiatrists; a previous Secretary for External Affairs of the British Association for Psychopharmacology, having occupied that post between 2000/03 and 2005/07; the Deputy Chief Examiner of The Royal College of Psychiatrists; a Past President of Depression Alliance; and a Medical Patron of the UK National Phobics Society. He has been Joint Editor of International Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice since 1997.
Dr Baldwin's research interests include the clinical psychopharmacology of anxiety and depressive disorders, sexual dysfunction with antidepressant drugs, and the prevention of suicidal behaviour. He has a professional interest in public education about mental disorder and its treatment, and was involved with the Defeat Depression Campaign for over six years. He is the author of 9 books and 30 chapters in books, and author or co-author of over 160 full articles in peer-reviewed journals.
