Professor Thomas Barnes

Thomas R. E. Barnes MB BS MD FRCPsych DSc is Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Imperial College, London, and joint-head of the Prescribing Observatory for Mental Health (POMH-UK) at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. In 1987, he set up one of the first tertiary-referral, clinical services for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. His research in schizophrenia and its treatment, which includes the Wellcome-funded West London first-episode study and the development of the Barnes Akathisia Rating Scale, has generated over 300 publications. Professor Barnes is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Psychopharmacology Special Committee and the MHRA Neurology, Pain & Psychiatry Expert Advisory Group. He is a past member of the Committee on Safety of Medicines, past President of the British Association for Psychopharmacology and has been a member of both NICE and BAP schizophrenia treatment guideline development groups.
