Rachel Upthegrove

University of Birmingham
Council Member until 2022

I am a Reader in Psychiatry and Youth Mental Health at the University of Birmingham, and Consultant Psychiatrist in the Birmingham Early Intervention Services. Clinically I have worked for over 18 years in psychiatry, for 12 years within the field of Early Intervention and Youth Mental Health. My research interest is within the field of major mental illness; particularly schizophrenia, depression and inflammatory models of psychosis. Through my clinical work I see day to day the challenges of a paucity of therapeutic options for our patients and the need for new pharmaceuticals, particularly targeted to a symptom based approach rather than categorical diagnoses. I am active in undergraduate MBChB and MPharm teaching at the University of Birmingham. I co-founded and lead an Intercalated BMedSc in Psychological Medicine, which has been shown to attract the brightest and best medical students to psychiatry. Many of our students have presented research findings at BAP conferences over the years supported by its bursaries. I am also the NIHR-CRN Specialty lead for division 4 in the West Midlands and have a gowning interest in industry engagement.

I have been a member of BAP for 4 years, and have benefited tremendously from BAP outputs, CPD, guidance and publications. I enjoy being active in the structure function of BAP with clinically relevant high-quality guidelines, information, education and training to practicing clinicians from all disciplines. I aim to ensure my on-going coal face clinical practice helps keep this accessible, realistic and relevant to the real world setting.
