Master in Affective Neuroscience AFN posted on Thursday, 22nd March 2012

The AFN is a postgraduate joint degree program from the Universities of Maastricht and Florence, with an emphasis on affective neuroscience research. The part-time two-year program is a combination of intensive one-week residential courses (2 summer courses and one winter course), combined with distance learning. The curriculum is built around an individual research project, the results of which must be published in a peer reviewed journal. Participants gather all these elements in their portfolio. When all requirements are fulfilled, this leads to the awarding of a Master Degree in Affective Neuroscience. The requirements of the portfolio are such that the results can be used as a first step in the direction of a PhD. In accordance with the Dutch higher education laws, the AFN has been accredited by the Accreditation Organization NVAO. This accreditation signifies that the program meets the quality standards for higher education in the Netherlands, and allows us to award the degree of Master of Science in Affective Neuroscience. The program is registered as a two-year part-time program and awarded with 60 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System).

The Summer Courses on Anxiety and on Mood Disorders can also be taken as a stand-alone course. The courses are challenging, intensive and highly interactive through the system of problem based learning in combination with lectures by experienced scientists. They are an excellent opportunity for participants to update and extend their knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of affective disorders. Both Summer Courses have been accredited by the European Accreditation Committee in CNS (EACIC) with continuous medical education (CME) credits.
