British Association for Pyschopharmacology. To advance education and research in the science of psychopharmacology
Council Member: Dr Anne Jackson, PhD, BScUniversity of Brighton. aj4@brighton.ac.uk
Council Member until 2012
Dr Jackson began her career in 1979 when she graduated from London University with a BSc in Pharmacology. She then worked for a time at the Institute of Neurology before going to Birmingham University where she completed her PhD in Psychology. Dr Jackson then worked as a pre-clinical psychopharmacologist in industry, firstly in Paris, then subsequently at Merck Sharp & Dohme in the UK. In 1995 she returned to academia to the University of Sussex where she continued in pre-clinical psychopharmacology, but also extended her work to human studies. Her current position is as Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton where she teaches Pharmacy students, Chairs the Ethics Committee and continues her research in human psychopharmacology.
Dr Jackson’s current research is aimed at understanding the neurochemical mechanisms underlying the effects of nicotine, combined with how its cognitive actions contribute to tobacco addiction. She also has a long standing interest in glutamatergic psychopharmacology and how this translates from preclinical science to humans.
Dr Jackson joined the BAP as a PhD student and has therefore been a member for more than 20 years. She is strongly committed to its multidisciplinary ethos and represents the interests of members from a number of areas (industrial, academic, pre-clinical, human). Dr Jackson is keen to support the Association in continuing the good work it does with its scientific programmes and encouragement of new scientists. In addition, as lay perspectives become increasingly acknowledged, she welcomes the opportunity to help the Association as it develops its public profile.
