British Association for Pyschopharmacology. To advance education and research in the science of psychopharmacology
Council Member: Dr Carmine Pariante, PhDInstitute of Psychiatry. Carmine.Pariante@iop.kcl.ac.uk
Council Member until 2012
Born in Italy, much of Carmine Pariante's research career has been at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, where he is currently a Reader, Head of the Laboratory of “Stress, Psychiatry and Immunology” (the SPI-Lab!), as well as the new Head of the Perinatal Psychiatry Section.
He has always been interested in the role of stress hormones and of proinflammatory cytokines in the pathogenesis of mental disorders and in the molecular mechanism of psychotropic drugs. Within this research area, he has used a variety of experimental models and clinical samples, and has fostered both basic and clinical junior scientists.
He has had the privilege of receiving some of the most prestigious research awards for research in psychopharmacology and biological psychiatry, including two Young Investigator Awards from the NARSAD, the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology Curt Richter Award, and the Young Minds in Psychiatry Award by the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education. But the Award he is most proud of is the BAP Vernalis Annual Prize that he received in Harrogate 2002, which really projected his career as a (then) young psychopharmacologist.
He has been a member of the BAP since 2000, and over the years has contributed to the scientific and academic activities of BAP at the annual meetings and at educational events for psychiatry trainees. All members of his team regularly attend the summer meetings, where they enjoy receiving great feedback and advice on how to bring their research forward.
His dream is that new, better therapeutic tools will soon be discovered to alleviate the suffering of patients with mental disorders, and he will use all of his energy to make this dream come true.
